Survey: Daily Multivitamins, Do They Make a Difference?

Does it really matter?

Depending on who you ask, taking a daily multivitamin will either help, hinder or not make a difference to your overall health.

Some people swear by them. Skeptics would assume it’s a ploy from the vitamin company to get people to spend money on something they don’t need, like big pharma. Then, there are people who are just neutral.

Most nutritionists agree, taking supplements should not replace a well-balanced diet and vitamins should come from food we eat first. Many of us with our busy schedules usually can’t manage this and we tend to make unhealthy, but quick choices. Although tasty, sugar-laced breakfast cereals are not part of a balance diet, no matter what the commercials say.

Here are three examples I’ve come across of the benefits of taking daily multivitamins:

  1. People who have had gastric bypass surgery. Taking multivitamins is the only way to supplement nutrients they are not getting from food because of the size of the stomach.
  2. People with digestive issues in which their bodies will not absorb nutrients normally.
  3. Doctors and midwives insist pregnant women and women who intend to become pregnant start taking prenatal vitamins critical for the development of a fetus.

Like with everything, there are pros and cons and finding the right dietary supplement is key. Part of this key is knowing what each vitamin does for you and only supplementing the nutrients you are missing from your regular food intake.

So what’s your opinion? What do you think about multivitamins?

We’ll share the results soon.
